Abstract: There is rapid convergence between the trajectories of ‘developed’ and ‘developing’ countries. Notwithstanding the huge economic advancement of the South, the persistent economic stagnation of the ‘Bottom Billion’ has gained increasing prominence. The overall objective of this study is to integrate poverty and environmental concerns into value chain analysis, in order to better understand how to support poor people in disadvantaged rural areas to successfully access markets and improve livelihoods. Are value chains perceived as ‘niche’ or value chains perceived as ‘conventional’ more effective mechanisms for reducing poverty? The report covers research in innovative value chain analyses and some successful project outcomes.
