Abstract: The research aimed to enhance at the regional level the early detection and characterization of AIV infection in migratory birds through a coordinated surveillance network. This report covers progress made between 2007 to 2009, that can be summarized as: wild bird surveillance for AI viruses’ detection and isolation; review of work concerning the role of wild bird in AI viruses vectors; migratory behavior of the key natural host species; set up of distribution database of key host species; graduate students training; and scientific, public, and governmental awareness-raising. Details of activities, outputs and outcomes are provided.
