Abstract: The Tsunami that hit Sri Lanka in December 2004 has brought a great loss of life, livelihood and infrastructure. While the unprecedented amount of financial and humanitarian assistance has been committed by the international aid agencies in response to the national disaster, little attention has been paid on how the concentration of assistance has impacted on the wider Sri Lankan economy and social structures, particularly in terms of poverty and equity. The study aims to discuss the impact of the tsunami on Sri Lanka as a whole focusing on both positive and negative effects.
