Brundtland Commission / Commission Brundtland (WCED) : [614] Topic home page

The World Commission on Environment and Development (also known as the Brundtland Commission after its chairman, Gro Harlem Brundtland) was convened by the United Nations in 1983 to address growing concern "about the accelerating deterioration of the human environment and natural resources and the consequences of that deterioration for economic and social development." In establishing the Commission, the UN General Assembly recognized that environmental problems were global in nature and determined that it was in the common interest of all nations to establish policies for sustainable development.

Because of its commitment to sustainable development and its worldwide contact with scientists and researchers, IDRC was given all the original documents of the Commission. The Collection covers a wide range of interrelated topics: technology, forestry, agriculture, energy, industry, economics, law, health, population, and politics. It includes all of the background papers, written submissions, and tapes and transcripts of the verbal testimonies given at the Commission's eight public hearings. This represents 43 volumes of material and 83 audio tapes.

The Brundtland Collection is housed in the IDRC Archives and access is provided by the Information Resources Centre of IMTD Division. Descriptive information (author, title and subject) for over 600 individual documents in the collection is available in the IDRC Digital Library.
