Abstract: Describes the food shortage and outlines its underlying causes: (1) adverse weather which reduced agricultural production and caused depletion of agricultural surpluses (2) rise in food consumption of meat and animal products in affluent societies and consequent heavy use of cereal grains as animal feed (3) underinvestment in the agricultural sector in developing countries.
