Abstract: Cet ouvrage présente les travaux réalisés sous l’égide des Analyses situationnelles du tabagisme en Afrique (ASTA), initiative de santé publique financée par le Centre de recherche pour le développement international (CRDI), organisme gouvernemental canadien. Conçu pour déterminer les facteurs susceptibles de faciliter la réforme des grandes politiques de santé publique en Afrique, ce programme s’est centré principalement (mais non exclusivement) sur les politiques relatives au tabagisme. Ses résultats, présentés dans ce livre, représentent une importante contribution aux travaux en santé publique au niveau mondial et sur le plan du développement international, en plus de présenter les analyses factuelles les plus exhaustives des politiques antitabac en Afrique. Les analyses effectuées dans chaque pays portent sur des sujets tels que la prévalence du tabagisme, la nature de leurs politiques de lutte antitabac respectives et les réformes dans les politiques de santé publique, ainsi que le rôle joué par l’industrie du tabac dans chacun de ces domaines essentiels. Le cadre conceptuel englobant toutes ces études de cas fonctionne dans l’intention affirmée de tirer des leçons profitables au continent entier. Conceived to illuminate the factors that will facilitate the reform of Africa’s major public health policies, this program focused particularly (but not exclusively) on policies concerning tobacco. The results, presented in this book, are an important contribution to the literature on global public health and international development, and comprise the most comprehensive evidence-based analysis of tobacco policy in the African region. The country-level analyses of this study examine topics such as smoking prevalence, the status of relevant smoking-related policies, and the politics of public health policy reform – as well as the role played by the tobacco industry in each of these key areas. Sitting above these case studies is an overarching conceptual framework, operating with the expressed goal of creating generalizable lessons for the continent as a whole.
