    <title>Role of the state</title>
    <link>http://idl-bnc.idrc.ca:80/dspace/handle/10625/50905</link>
    <description>Title: Role of the state
Editors: Scerri, Mario; Lastres, Helena M.M.; Cassiolato, José E.; Couto Soares, Maria Clara
Abstract: This series of books brings together results of an intensive research programme on aspects of the national systems of innovation in the five BRICS countries — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. It provides a comprehensive and comparative examination of the challenges and opportunities faced by these dynamic and emerging economies. In discussing the impact of innovation with respect to economic, geopolitical, socio-cultural, institutional and technological systems, it reveals the possibilities of new development paradigms for equitable and sustainable growth.&#xD;
&#xD;
&#xD;
This volume, first in the series, analyses the relationship between the state and the evolution of the national systems of innovation. Putting forward several valuable considerations and policy recommendations, it argues that the experiences and knowledge gathered here may deeply impact the way we conceive of the theory of innovation systems, and implement policies and strategies for their development. Original and detailed data together with expert analyses by contributing authors on wide-ranging issues will make this an invaluable resource for researchers and scholars in economics, development studies and political science, as well as for policy-makers and development practitioners interested in the BRICS countries.

    <description>Title: Enforcing competition rules in South Africa : thieves at the dinner table
Authors: Lewis, David
Abstract: This fascinating book describes and analyses the development of competition law in South Africa, promoting a deeper understanding of the development of this foundational economic law within its specific national, social and economic context. Enforcing Competition Rules in South Africa is a clear and insightful account of the establishment and first decade of one of the most successful competition law institutions to have mushroomed over the past 15 years. David Lewis believes that, while there is much to learn from international scholarship and jurisprudence and from participation in the various multinational initiatives in this field, competition law and its institutions have to be understood within their national economic and social contexts.

    <title>Manufacturing enterprise in Asia : size structure and economic growth</title>
    <link>http://idl-bnc.idrc.ca:80/dspace/handle/10625/50721</link>
    <description>Title: Manufacturing enterprise in Asia : size structure and economic growth
Authors: Mazumdar, Dipak; Sarkar, Sandip
Abstract: Issues relating to the size of firms in manufacturing are central to the discussion of development strategies. This book offers an interpretation of growth trajectories in selected Asian economies in terms of the size structure of enterprises in the manufacturing sector of these economies.&#xD;
The book presents a comparative survey of the distribution of enterprises by size across Asia, including Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, Bangladesh, and Vietnam. It identifies three distinct patterns of manufacturing sector development and makes the connection between enterprise development and the overall impact on the economy. The book goes on to investigate the problem of the peculiar dual size structure of manufacturing in India, with its two modes at the low and high end of the size distribution and conspicuous “missing middle”, and the effect that this has on the economy. It is an important contribution to studies on Asian Economics and Manufacturing Industries.
